Army Legal Assistance
Personnel serving overseas are often not able to obtain legal advice from civilian solictors on their personal legal problems. Instead, this service is provided by the Army Legal Service (ALS) under the Army Legal Assistance (ALA) Scheme.
Army Legal Assistance is based at Catterick Barracks, Bielefeld in Germany and provides legal advice to service personnel worldwide. Advice is provided from ALA offices or legal clinics in theatres of operation. Claims arising under the MoD’s Criminal Injuries Compensation (Overseas) Scheme and medical negligence claims arising from problems in German designated hospitals treating British servicemen and their dependants are handled in the Bielefeld office.
Army Legal Advice is a free service but it does not:
- provide financial assistance for legal expenses
- fund court costs (e.g. divorce fees)
- provide representation in court
- advise on criminal defence matters
- advise on action against the MoD
